THE SINGAPORE BASE.
ANGLO-JAP. ALLIANCE. WILL IT END? LONDON, July 20. The Prime Minister (Mr. Stanley Baldwin), replying to Mr. George Lambert (Liberal) in the House of Commons, said that the Singapore naval base was recommended by the Admiralty to enable modern battleships to be docked there for repairs. The recommendation was endorsed by the Committee of Imperial Defence and the Cabinet. Mr: Lambert: "May it be assumed that the Foreign Office was not consulted f , Mr. Baldwin: "I should not think that. I do not know whether it was specially consulted, but the Foreign Office is represented in the Cabinet." Mr. Shirley Benn: "Ha*s your attention been directed to the statement of a leading Japanese statesman that if Britain is to look after her interests In the Pacific the building of a base at Singapore is a natural sequel to the ending of the British-Japanese alliance?" Mr. Baldwin: "I have not seen it, but it seems a very sensible statement."—(A. and N.Z. Cable.)
