BATTLE OF COURTESY.
ALONSO AND TItDEN. GLENOOEdII.), July 12. Manuel Aloneo (Spain) eensationally defeated Tilden, winning the Illinois singles championship, the sets being 8—6,11—13,6—3,6—1. This is the first time Tilden has been defeated by a European. Previously he has been beaten on several occasions by Americans and Australians. The match ended dramatically. Alonso served to Tilden, and the latter's return hit the net. Aloneo exclaimed, "It was a net ball: I must serve again." The linesman ruled aeainst the Spaniard, who threw the balls and his. racquet on to the ground. The umpire intervened, and allowed a re-play. Aloneo, however, refused to take advantage of this, and deliberately hit two services out of the court, giving a point to Tilden. American courtesy, as demonstrated by Tilden, proved the equal of Castilian, and Tilden purpoeevy played the next two services into the gallery. The match ended with the spectators gasping.
