TRAMWAY EFFICIENCY.
(To the Editor.* Sir, — The new recording devices [ whereby tramway motormen arc re-1 quired to register the time of arrival at Tarious points along their routes , seem to be quite good in theory and there seems to be no reason why they should not be just as good in practice— but that the latter is not so I learned ' very well on Sunday last when travel- i ling on the Mt. Albert route. The tram in which I was travelling took about half an hour to go from Kingsland section to the terminus. At one re- i cording box we stopped four minutes as i the tram was ahead of schedule time, we simply rushed to the next, and to the next we positively crawled. On the journey back on another tram we stopped almost eight minutes at one box which is to say the least annoying— perhaps something worse if you happen to be in a hurry. I questioned a conductor on this new efficiency scheme. He replied, "Oh of course the motorman does not like it for it means that he has frequently to get out of the car and rush over to the recording box and ring the bell—also the times which he Iβ supposed to take to go from various points are so badly regulated that he has to speed some between certain boxes and wait or go-slow between others —as for mc I don't mind as the stops give mc a chance for a smoke now and again." Surely the system might foe worked properly by the schedule of times to be taken between each recording .box being correctly ascertained so that the run would be at a uniform speed with no long etops or periods of "go-slow."—l am, etc., E. Sir, —Might I 6Uggest that you uee your influence for the benefit of all concerned, more especially strangers, to persuade the corporation to inaiet on those in charge of the tramway working to j have the destination signs altered from their preeent system, which is most confusing. One would think it took half an hour or more to change the destination ■boards. All cars coming to the city should be marked "post office" or "city," with the route shown. What on earth ie the use of marking the cars in the present confusing manner is the question asked by all. —I am, etc., VISITOR.
