LETTING IN THE YELLOW FLOOD
A PROFESSOR'S ADVOCACY. HALF-CASTES NOT INFERIOR. ASIATIC BLOOD IN EUROPE. (By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyrlsht.) (Received 10 a.m.) SYDNEY, this day. Professor Griffith Taylor (Professor of Geography at Sydney University), lecturing at the Millions Club on "Ethnoogical Problems," asked why we were so horror-stricken at any suggestion of marriage with Mongolians. Jf it were necessary to admit cultured Mongolians into Australia in future, why dread it? There were Asiatic peoples of precisely the same races as ourselves, and though the result of union would be a half-caste race, it would be in no way inferior to either of the parent races. The White Australia policy was very sound in the early stages of the young Commonwealth, but it would not be a good thing for our grandchildren to have made bitter enemies of the Yellow races. He asked thinking men to realise that the admission of a small proportion of Asiatics to Australia might not be a calamity. He pointed out that more than half the people of Europe were of Asiatic origin, closely allied to the northern Chinese. Experience proved that given time enough the different nationalities could mix and produce a satisfactory and progressive nation..— (A. and N.Z. Cable.) Professor Griffith Taylor is one of the most eminent geologists and geographers in Australia, but he does not claim to be an ethnologist. Born in London 43 years ago, he was brought to Australia in 1893 and was educated at the Sydney University, where he tosk a number of scholarships, graduating at Cambridge by means of these. He was senior geologist with Scott's Antarctic expedition, and was leader of the western parties in 1911-12. On his return he became Acting-Common-wealth Geologist at Canberra and Instructor in Physiography at the Melbourne University. Three years ago he joined the professorial staff of" the Sydney University.
