General rates were strut- as follow: —Albert Riding outlying 4d, road district -U; Arai outlying _§d, road lgd; Hoteo. 2}d; Kaipara outlying _jd, road l|d; Kourawhero, outlying 15d road Id; Matakana, outlying 2_l, road IJd; Omaha, J_d; Puhoi, lid; Tauboa, outlying 2d, road Id. An application for a slaughterhouse license to Messrs. P. H. and H. Greenwood. Portion of the road reserve at Aburoa was leased to Mr. J. Berger. A petition was received from ratepayers at Wharehine and Puhoi against the proposed merging of road boards. Deputations from Mahurangi East. North Albertland, Albertland South, Wharehine, Puhoi and Warkworth Road Boards also waited 'on the council and protested against the merger. Cr. Knaggs moved that road boards be all merged in the county by special order. He stated that there were seven road boards In the county, making duplication of returns and much extra clerical work, but less subBldy on the whole, preventing applications for grants and creating multiplicity of rates in "ridinzs. Cr. Boler moved as an amendment that the question be held over for 32 months. The amendment was lost and tbe motion carried. Messrs. Becroft, Boler and Scholium voted against. The district engineer notified re T°marata - Wellsford Road. throti-h Waitletie Soldiers' Settlement, that 148 chains required construction at a cost of £1000. A sum of £400 was provided on last year's estimates, and £300 promised by the Land Board. The remainder would be provided on this year's estimates. A petition was presented by ratepayers of Albert, Hoteo and Tauhoa ridings, asking for survey of a road to connect Tauroa and Wellsford. the present road being 15 miles. The route proposed would be five miles across. The engineer was instructed to make an inspection and supply an estimate of cost. Conncillor Boler was appointed delegate to the Counties' Association Conference, to be held in Wellington in July. Remits will also be sent to the conference asking that steps be taken to extend the period of road loans lo 75 years, where rn:id to ! >e nade -j>i permanent material: and asking that local bodies be granted halves on gum royalties from gum washing plants. The clerk reported that a deferred judgment delivered in the recent test by-law case over the traffic by-laws dismissed the case on technical points, costs being given against the council. No decision as to the validity of the by-law was given. The engineer was instructed to prepare plans an _ estimate for a new bridge at Ahuroa station.
