NORTHCOTEBOROUGH COUNCIL
Tne ordinary meeting of the Northcote Borough Council was held last night The Mayor, Mr. \V. K. Richardson, presided, and Councillors F. O. Devlin, .T. B. Tonar, Arthur Golden, Alfred Parrish, A. W. Smith, W. C. Smith, O. R. Rrinsden, Wni Kinley, and Chas. Hunter were also present. Land for Hoad.—The Town Clerk was inBtrueted to write to Mi-. Archie Campbell that the council had agreed to accept his offer made to the Mayor and Mr. Tonar of the strip o£ land a chain \vidi>. and about three and a-hali chains in length, for £100, in order to form v road connecting I'iinces Street with Alfred Street. Ferry Timetable.—Mr. A. L Browne and 131 residents of Northcote and Ulrkenhead, wrote stating that annoyance was caused by frequent delay in berthing at Northcotc of the 5.40 p.m. lioat from Auckland, because of the steamer leaving liirkenhead at the same time running late. They sue gested the departure from Birkenheai should be five minutes later. The Devon port Ferry Company wrote that in ordet to ensure the steamer leaving Blrkenheac at schedule time, the 5.13 p.m boat from Auckland should call at Northcote, Birken head, and Chelsea, and omit Birkenhead 01 the return trip. Mr. Tonar considered tht Birkenhead council would not agree to this. The position conld be met by the steamm from the city being given preference oi berthing at Nortlicote. The council adopted this suggestion. Water Extensions. —The tender of John Burns ana Co., Ltd., at £181 2/S was accented for ten tons of four-inch cast iron water mains for extending the reticulation In Walmana Avenue and Belle Vue Avenue Fire Blight.—lt was agreed to comply with the notice of the Department of Agriculture to destroy the hawthorn hedges at the Takapuna pumping station. The Town intimated that the hawthorn in Talbot Koad had already been cut down. Mr. A. Parrish said It would be more to the purpose if the Department would take measures to have the trees infected with fire blight cut down. The Mayor said he understood this was being attended in. Slot Telephone.—The Department is to be requested to place a slot telephone box in Xorthcote. Post Office.—On the motion of Mr A. \V. Smith it was decided to request the Postal Department to arrange for the Post Onic**? to be open between nuou and 1 p.m., and the hours thus be continous from !) a.m. till 5 p.m. Cattle Ranger —Mr. J. F, Jackson was re-appointed cattle ranger at an annual remuneration of £18 and driving fees.
