PRINCIPLES OF ADVERTISING.
An interesting lecture on the above subject was given last night under the auspices of the Sheldon Club hy Mr. W. ■ James Eraser. The speaker traced the development through the ages, making reference to the old English inns, which advertised 'by means of a sign or symbol, right up to the present day, when the man who does not advertise in some way or other practically ceases to exist as far as the business world is concerned. The first point to be considered was the getting of attention and so instil into the minds of the readers the thoughts of the writer. To get attention one had to consider many factors, particularly the colour seAeme, also the kind of type. The speaker urged the advisability of con suiting of advertising specialist, when going in for extensive advertising. Thb great mistake made by many advertisers was that they forget the other man when writing advertisements by writing their own point of view only. Mr. Fraser stressed the matter of having newspaper advertisements written in such a way that they will attract the attention oi the average busy man, who has only a limited time for his reading, or the housewife who glanced through the newspaper as the opportunity presented iteelf.
