POWDER AND PATCHES BALL.

nOTORIA LEAGUE AXNUAL FUXCTIOX. The second Powder and Patches Ball given under the auspices of the Victoria league was held last evening, in the Scots' Hall. Symonds Street, and was a brilliant success. The beautiful hall was decorated in a style of classical, beauty that reflected great credit on the designers. Long garlands of laurel leaves were looped round the walls from , light to light, and beneath each wall ] bracket a garland fell straight down j **ith a cascade of large English clematis i »f paper flowers, embellishing it. Across the front of the gallery the same effect ■was arranged, only in lighter and longer garlands. The whole scheme was severe i and plain, and carried out in the Greek fflanner. The front of the stage was filled with beautiful pot plants] lent by Hon. Arthur Myers, and w hen the floor was filled with the gailydressed and powdered dancers the dance ball presented a charming scene. A string band of twelve performers added greatly to the enjoyment. The president (Mr. Lind ' Mitchell), assisted by Mrs. Mitchell, who was handsomely gowned in apple-blossom channeuse. witli handsome over-dress of silver tissue, and Miss Mowbray, who wore battle grey soupie satin and white silk lace, received the Governor-General and Vfscountss Jellicoe, who wore black soupie satin, witli black jetted lace, heavily beaded over-dress, and royal "hie flower garland. Her ornaments "ere a diamond tiara, a diamond necklace, and ropes of pearls. The Hon. -_cy Jellicoe was a charming figure in rose pink taffata, made in the mode of the period, and berthe of white lace. Her hair, which was powdered, was worn """"th a ]_ng curl over the shoulder, and the old-world dress was entraucinglv Becoming. A delightful part of the evening was the dancing of the minuet by sets in different-coloured frocks of the period, the men wore powder, and in some cases Perukes, and the ladies powder and the becoming dress of the Georgian era. The "lately dance, with its graceful and dignified movement, its old-world bowa by ">e men, and graceful curtseys by the women, was loudly applauded on conclusion, and after the arrival of the Prime who was accompanied by Mrs. Jlassey, wearing black channeuse with brocade, the Hon.
