Mr. H. M. Gates, of England, is at the Grand Hotel. Mr. H. Atmore, M.P. for Nelson, is at present visiting Auckland. Mr. and Mrs. G. A. Findlay, Dunedin, are staying at the Grand Hotel. Messrs. C. F. Slade and A. Cohen, of Sydney, are at the Star Hotel. Messrs. H. W. Bain and R. Vander- ' kelen. of Melbourne, who are visiting Auckland, are at the Grand Hotel. Mr. H. R. Mackenzie, chairman of the Auckland Harbour Board, left for Wellington by the Main Trunk express last evening. Sir Joseph Ward attended the races at Ellerslie again this afternoon. He will leave for Wellington on Wednesday evening. Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Haslam, who have been on an extended visit to Sydney, returned to Auckland this morning by the Makura. Mrs. C. Edgares, wife of the manager of Fuller's Opera House, has returned to Auckland after an absence of two years in Australia. Mrs. Acheson, wife of Professor Acheson, of New York, who for some months has been touring New Zealand with her two children, has returned to Auckland for a few weeks, preparatory to leaving for her home in the States. Mr. J. P. Luke, assistant manager and engineer for Messrs. Turnbull and Jones. Limited. Auckland, having resigned his position, was on Thursday last made the recipient of a presentation from his colleagues. Mr. A. Baker, C.8.E., and Mrs. Baker, of the Federated Malay States, who arrived at Auckland this morning from Sydney by the Makura. are at the Grand Hotel. Mr. Baker, who is a native of Auckland, has been absent for over 30 years. Mr. C. H. Burgess, an old Devonport boy, who was Mayor of New Plymouth during the latter part of the war period, has decided to again contest the mayoralty of that borough with the present occupant of the oflice. Mr. F. E. Wilson. The Rev. T. X. Griffin, of Papanui. Christchurch, who began his ministry in New Zealand at Coromandel, Mercury Bay, and Tairua, in 1882, is at present revisiting Auckland, and is the gueßt of Mr. and Mrs. J. Trevithick, St. .lames' Square. Mr. J. P. Kalaugher. with a party of I niversity students, has been camping in a couple of canvas tents on the slopes of Mt. Ruapehu during the Easter holidays. Mr. Kalaugher is interested in the flora of that part of the country, and is anxious to discover new specimens. Mr. Maurice Bramlev. of Stanley Bay. who formerly spent some years in Suva and other islands in connection with cable work, but who has been connected with the Auckland office for the past four or five years, has again been transferred to Suva, and left in the Tofua on Saturday. Mr. G. Parr, of Hamilton, for some years president of the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce, is announced as a candidate for a seat on the Auckland Harbour Board as the representative of the combined district of the counties of Waikato and Raglan and Hamilton borough district. Word has been received by cable of the death at Glasgow of the Rev. "Mr. West, at the great age of Bf> years. Mr. West was for a great number of years in charpe of the Free Church at Cromar, in the North of Scotland, where he did faithful and lastinp work amongst the hardy crofters in that picturesque and delightful part of the country. He is survived by his wife to whom his loss is irreparable. Mrs. Lamb Harvey, of Auckland, is a daughter of the deceased gentleman, and there are some sons who have reached a high position in the professions of the Old Land.
