IN SEARCH OF BIG GAME.

NOTES INDIAN PRINCE. FROM STATK OF BARODA. An interesting visitor to Auckland just now is Shirmant S. Gaikwad, a distinguished Indian prince, brother to the famous (laekwar of Barexla (thej ruler of one of the most important, independent States in Tndia). Thc| prince, who arrived hy the Mamma from* Sydney, is staying at the Royal Hotel, and to-day was the guest of his fellow [ countryman. Dr. B. S. Share. A famous, big game hunter, the prince has come to! New Zealand to see the sights, and | incidentally he is going 10 have a shot nt the deer, or anything else that comes | his way. A report from Australia that, he was after "big game fishing" made him laugh, and he waves the piscatorial sort of thing aside as only fit for children. The prince is middle-aged, short, and stout, and does not at first sight suggest the stalker of big game, but that is one of his hobbies, and that, he has ridden! it to some purpose is attested by the] fact that he has bowled over anything! from elephants down to elands, in be-i tween being giraffes, hippos, and others. This sort of thing of course requires the purse of an Indian potentate, and on a remarkable big game-shooting expedition he made to East Africa he spent no less than 40,000 rupees. On that occasion he had 200 native porters, and the rest' of the expedition was on a similar scale.' His Highness speaks English fluently and colloquially, and when you remark ! on the fact he says, "Oh. yes. I was at] Ovford, and was also called to the Bar." He has done a lot of important! work in India, where he holds respon-! sidle and important positions, including' membership of the Legislative Council] and the Executive Councils. He is keenj to see Rotorua, and after visiting that famous spot, and going down South after' deer, he will leave for San Francisco on] his way back to England and India
