AMERICA'S SHIPPING.
THE STATE-OWNED FLEET.
SHIPOWNERS' SUGGESTION. SELL OR SCRAP THE LOT. (By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright.) NEW YORK, March 27. . The chairman of the United States Shipping Board, Mr. Lasker, who asked the American Steamship Owners' Aseociation to co-operate with the Shipping Board in determining a policy for the disposition of the Government-owned fleet for the purpose of liquidating the affairs of the board, received a curt reply. The association briefly advised the board to scrap all inferior ships and Bell those remaining to Americans without restrictions or discrimination. Those ships not sold should bo also scrapped, and the Shipping Board immediately retire. The association points out that there are few freight passenger or mail services maintained by Shipping Board vessels which may be regarded as essential to the national interests, and declares that experience demonstrates that the American merchant marine in foreign trade cannot be built up through Government operation. The board replied to the association, declaring that the advice was disappointing, ambiguous, and contradictory. (A. and N.Z. Cfcble.)
