TUHIS DEATH SENTENCE.
— m PETITION FOR REPRIEVE. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Tuesday. It is understood that a petition has been prepared urging that John Tuhi, the '■ young Maori under sentence of death for \ the murder of his former employer, ; Herbert Henry Knight, at Johnson ville, j should be granted a reprieve on general grounds. The petition will, of course, be forwarded to the Governor-General. Ac his Excellency is at present away from the city, and owing to the fact that the matter has yet to be dealt with by the Executive Council, several members of which, including the Prime Minister, are engaged in the North, it is not expected that any pronouncement will he made in connection with the matter for at least some days.
