SWIMMING

AUCKLAND CENTRE CARNIVAX.

MISS WYUE YVIXS BIG RACE. A rarnlval promoted by the Auckland Swimming Centre was held in the Tepid Batbs lust night ami attracted much interest. Mis« Minn Wylie. the Sydney lady champion, and Miss I. Yenning, of Queensland, were among those who competed. There wus a keen spirit of competition in evidence in all events, und some of the liiiishes were very even. Especially was this I rue of the looyds Aiistralusian Indies' scratch invitation race, in which there were live < onipetitors: Misses Wylie. Yenning I'auliue Hoeft. K. Stockley, and Pirt Page. All look oIT well. Miss Wylie striking the water first. There was scarcely anything between the swimmers till the tlrst turiiT when Miss Hoeft made n bis effort and drew ahead. Miss Yenning, who had ( been doing her best to get ahead, seemed to tire and she was passed by Miss Wylie. the last named turning for the third lap with Miss Hueft. Miss Piri Page then became prominent and. displaying great reserve powers, she held steadily behind the two leaders. Over the lust 30 yards it was h determined struggle, with Miss Wylie drawing away from Miss Iloeft with every stroke. With about seven yards to go she redoubled her energies and leaped ahead to win by fully two yards from the Auckland ludv. while Miss l'age was thin!, just behind. It was it great rare, the lime being CSs. Misses Wyli... Yenning and K. Walrond comprised the Australian team and Misses Hoeft. Sto.-kley and l'age the Auckland team in the 300 yds Australasian scratch Invitation relay race. The tlrst lap saw Miss Page beat Ml.ss Yenning by a HUle over two yards. In the second Miss Stockley did not lose the advantage, although Miss Walrond made every endeavour to reduce the space between them, and »M 11,-eft had a start of about four seconds. This was too much for Miss Wylie and the Auckland lady was home se.veral . yi irj « ahead after a great swim. On coming out of the water Miss Iloeft collapsed. lbfc time was 3m 435. The 68 2-3 yds ladies - brenststroke handicap was an interesting event, wb-«;' s s b Yenning won in Sβ seconds. Mlss laruull. who beat Miss Wylie. being second. In the lOOvds oi.cn handicap. C. K.
