JOSEPH ARCH.
(To the Editor.) $j r> —i notice that in your leader a few night ago you made reference to Joseph ATch, the Labour leader of his day. I thought that perhaps the following might interest some of your readers: —Joseph Arch and his wife were well 'known to my mother 00 or 70 years ago. He was then a labourer, known as an edger and ditcher, and earning 6/ a week at that business. When "his first child was born, his wife one day said: "Joe, we must have more money." Joe had had no education and had never been to school in his life, but that remark of his wife's raised the question in his mind, "Was it possible to earn more money?" And Joe from that time began to educate himself, and so 'became the leader of the movement mentioned in the leader referred to.—l am, etc., V. DRYLAND.
