POPULAR SCIENCE LECTURE.
A representative and appreciative audience greated Mr. J. W. Povnton, S.M., last nisrht in the Chamber of Commerce -when he delivered a lecture "under the auspices of the Sheldon Club on "Radium and its Marvels." The lecturer traced the events that led up to the discovery of radium right from the time wlien uranuim became known, also mentioning the researches made by such famous scientists as Madame Curiey. Rutherford and Ramsey. Mr. Poynton stated how wonderful radium was in its activity, giving off light and warmth for all times, and that three tons, if it were possible to get together such a. quantity, would give as much energy as the three million tons of coal produced annually in New Zealand. A specimen of radium was displayed to those present, which, very much added interest to the meeting. At the conclusion, the speaker was heartily thanked for his splendid address also the able way in Which he had answered questions.
