CONDENSED CORRESPONDENCE.
"Single Preferential" objects to any system of proportional representation on the following grounds: (1) The system is too unwieldy for a sparsely .settled country like New Zealand; (2) it is apt to disfranchise minorities, i.e., remote settlements and non-party men; (3) it practically prohibits Independents; (4) it gives an unfair advantage to one political party; (5) unless combined with preferential voting, it does not necessarily mean majority rule; (6) it makes 'byelections excessively costly to the State (and to the candidates).
