LAND AND OPPORTUNITY.
Two items on different pages of today's "Herald" may profitably lie considered together. One is a eulogy ot New Zealand from the point of view ot tin- English emigrant, by Sir Horace Bayer, an Knglisli visitor. "1 shall not forget." he says, "the tilings that most impressed mc during my tour, and most assuredly when I get hack to England I shall preach the gospel of Australia's and New Zealand's possibilities whenever the chance arises. What is needed is to convince the good, solid type of [Englishman that a really bright future is otTered him out here, as contrasted with the limited openings that are available in England." Wo arc grateful to Sir Horace for his kind re marks. It. may not have escaped his notice, however, that a British emignuit writes to I lie "Herald" to .say that lie arrived in N'cw Zealand eighteen months ago. but h:is been unable to get hind from the Government, or to lieprivate land for sale at a profitable price. "I personally went to the Government Lands ollices, Auckland, in December, 1021, and was told candidly they had nothing. I have recently received a Crown Lands Guide, and sec that they still have nothing l attrac' : ve to offer.'' Such a man U in a he icr position than the tourist to learn the facts about the attractions New Zealand lias to offer the immigrant, who wishes to take up land. This is called a land of opportunity, hut flip praise may be qualified by the remark that the land is here, but the opportunity is not so extensive as it should be.
