TAKAPUNA MAYORALTY.

MR. GOULD AGREES TO STASD. The Takapuna Borough Council Chambers was well filled last evening by a large and representative deputation of residents and ratepayers who placed before the Mayor,' Mr. A. M. Gould, cogent reasons why he should allow himself to be' again nominated for another term. Mr. E. E. Grimwade 6aid Mr. Gould, during his present term had retained the confidence and esteem of the people of Takapuna, and there was a very general desire that he should continue to occupy that position for a further period. Mr. Grimwade spoke of the extraordinary progress recently made by the borough, which, he said, comparatively speaking, was probably unequalled by any other town or city in the Dominion. There were important matters, such as drainage and water supply, to be dealt with, and it was of the utmost importance that they should have the benefit of Mr. Gould's - ,: lit3' and knowledge .in carrying iiem through. Mr. T. B. Arthur in cordially supporting the first speaker, assured the Mayor of the council's unanimity, in a desire that he should agree to be again nominated. Mr. Gould, in reply, expressed appreciation ' of the honour conferred upon him. The position of Mayor of the borough during the next two years, .he said, would be no sinecure. There would 'be work, to be carried out involving loans of £75,000 and £100,000 if they could be raised, and an additional £32,000 of ordinary income had to be disbursed. It was really a job for a man of leisure, but, after anxious consideration, he had concluded that there rested upon him a duty to offer his services during the ensuing period. (Loud applause.) Mr. Gould expressed his acknowledgments of the cordial assistance he had received from the members of the council during the past two years, particularly, the chairmen of committees and of the co-operation of the outdoor staff.
