THE DAVIS CUP.

CKAIXENGE BT INDIA. <RecelTc* 10 «•»>•) DELHI, February 28. The annual general meeting of the 411 India Tennis Association was held at Lahore, when the Maharaja Kapurthala, who was presiding, announced that India had challenged for the Davie Cup in the European zone.—(A. and N.Z. Cable.) Hitherto the supreme difficulty has been to bring together the lawn tennis playing nations of the world owing to the high travelling expenses. To overcome this a sort of pool is to be formed from the receipts of the different matches and the governing authority will endeavour to pay the travelling expenses of all the competing teams. When this charge has been met the smpfua receipts will be shared. In the event of any deficiency the amount of the expenses incurred by the nations ■will be taken into account, but the first claim on net receipts will be travelling expenses. To facilitate the carrying out of this scheme a zoning system has been agreed upon. Under this the competitors will be separated in two sections, American and European. Different draws will be made and each nation on entry will have to declare in which section it wishes to take part. When each section has been played out according to the draw the respective winners will meet to decide who should challenge the holders of the cup. Under this arrangement South Africa, India, Japan and Australia, may either go to Europe or America for the preliminary matches, and one presumes that the choice will largely be determined by the place where the challenge match has to be staged. Whilst the cup remains with America this arrangement is not very good from the point of view of British interests, for it will piot>ably mean that Australasia will enter in the American section, and thus the players may not go to Britain to compete in the championships at Wimbledon.
