OUR TELEPHONE SERVICE

(Tv the E.lltortj. Sir.—Now that the telephone charges are to be increased, we must insist upon having a much more efficient service than we have had in the past. It is no use mincing matters, but the present system is absolutely disgraceful. 1 inn sick of ringing up "Complaints." I do not blame the stall. There is no doubt there is always an improvement after the telephone has been tinkered up a hit. hut unfortunately the improvements rarely last longer than a few hours. My opinion is that a lot of the telephones in use should have been scrapped years ago. My case is nor by any means a singular one. We hear complaints everywhere, and with such an unsatisfactory service, subscribers haturally resent such a big increase in their subscription. Personally. I do not in the least mind paying the higher figure, if we get value for our money, but let us have an efficient service. T recognise that the exchange attendants have much to put up with, but still there are times l when a little more consideration might, be shown. For instance, it is a common experience to ask for a number and hear an indistinguishable mutter, not knowing whether it means "through or "engaged.'' After this happens two or three times, you are told that the number you want is engaged, but this is only one of the many annoyances the unfortunate subscriber has to put up with. —I am, etc., D. C. ERASER.
