FATALITY AT DEVONPORT.
BODY FOUND ON ROCKS. & PROBABLE FALL FROM PROMENADE. The body of a sailor was found about eight o'clock this morning lying, face downwards, on the rocks in the sea, off the promenade on the eastern side ol the Victoria wharf, Devonport. The remains were subsequently identified as those of Hubert Charles" Chinnery, wardroom steward on H.M.s. Chatham. Death had apparently been caused by drowning, and from the position of the body it is considered probable that the deceased had fallen off the promenade on to the rocks below, the ebbing tide failing to carry the body away. The deceased, who" was a single man with relatives in the north of London, left the ship at the Sheerlegs wharf at eight o'clock last night, apparently in good health, but as he. suffered from a weak heart, it is thought possible that while walking on the promenade he had a fit and fell into the water. His movements after leaving the ship have not, so far, been traced. The body was removed to the morgue at Auckland, where an inquest was formally opened for the purpose of irlentirVation before Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M., this afternoon.
