Over 2UUO people crowded into the I Manly Baths the other day, when Mie I Manly Amateur Swimming Club held' its annual carnival. The chief attraction was the 440 yards championship of the Northern Suburbs, in which "Boy" Charlton early wrested the title from Iv. Kirkwood of the Spit Club. ft was announced before the race that Charlton had no intention of trying to lower the world's record, as bad" been stated He nad just returned from a fortnight . holiday in the country, and was not in ■■sufficiently good training to make such an attempt. The Manly champion's partisans in the crowd greeted their hero with a howl of delight when he appeared on tbe board, and the barracking was kept up throughout the race. Never once did the i.-s„ e SPem ; n doubt YY'Ph Ins perfect rhythmical stroke, the 1.----yenr-old champion was yards from his opponents before a quarter of tbe dis tance had been swum. He did not seem to exert himself at any part of the race and won easily by near!* 20 j-ards.
