PLUNKET SHIELD MATCH.

CANTERBURY V. WELLINGTON. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, this day. The Plunket Shield match, Canterbury v. Wellington, commenced at Lancaster Park to-day in fine weather. Canterbury won the' toss and batted, R. C. Blunt opening to Brice, with Worker at the other end batting to McGirr. Opening play was very quiet, four overs producing four runs, the scores at noon being 34 for no wickets, Blunt la. Worker IS. At noon Aldersley took over the attack from McGirr, from whom 17 runs had been scored. His first two balls went for singles, and the sixth also for one. Blunt put the last ball of the over up close to mid-on. Collins got his hands on it but could not hold it. Facing Henderson, Worker scored two with a well-timed shot, bringing 50 up for fifty-seven minutes' play. When Blunt was 29 Aidersley appealed for leg-before, but the umpire ■ shook his head. When the score was 64 Brice came on again in place of Aldersley. Worker gave n chance at 27, driving Brice hard and high over mid-off, but Aldereley dropped it. Hutchings took up the bowling from Henderson. Blunt made the total 70 and his own score 40 by hitting him for 4. At 12.30 the score was 73 for no wicketsHutchings replaced Brice. Baker, at square-leg, caught Worker off Brice's second ball. 76—1—27. Talbot came in. but soon lost Blunt, who was clean bowled with almost a full-toss by Brice. 70—2—--44. At Hamilton to-day, James Hunter, charged with attempted theft of a gold watch and chain valued at £10 from John Farrell, was committed for trial. It was alleged that Hunter, who was in an hotel with Farrell. seized the other man's watch and chain and attempted to bolt, but Farrell. though an old man, hung on to Hunter till the arrival of the 1 police.
