DISEASES IN CATTLE.
TI.OCBI.K KOCNI) Ml iRRINSV'II.I.K. 'F:oln Our CI.-'". C-rresponrfent.) MOKRiNSVIIJ.K. this day. A disease, believed to be a form of ma intuit i<. recently made its appearance in several of the herd- round Morrinsvillc and for a time caused some farmers .rave concern. Ijbe malady appears lii-st in one quarter, "which becomes bard, and if not attended to the cow becomes totally dry. It is not known exactly how many herds have been affected, but it lias been reported ill several in lhe district. There appear to have been more milking I roubles this season than in previous years. The present wet season has been a good one for milk, and at such a time the cows are more easily disturbed and more subject to diseases, especially in respect to hard quarters. As to the divert causes of the disease, one farmer believes that the climatic conditions contribute to a certain degree. The very hot days and the very ,-onl and often chilly nights which have been prevalent during the past month, were found to precede the discovery of a hard quarter somewhere in the herd. Sonic farmers blame milking machines, as tending to transmit, disease. \ settler, while confidently asserting that the disease was caused or aggravated by the machines, said that he had not heard of a case in a herd in which the cows were band milked. According to the statements of the farmers, when a cow is found suffering with the hard udder it mus; not lie milked by the machine. It must be hand milked until the affection has completely disappeared, when il can go back to the machine again. Various remedies have al.-o been used, but the most simple appears to be kerosene rubbed on the affected pari for three , ouseciil ive milkings. A Karaimi farmer, speaking of the disease, said. "No doubt it is a form of mammitis and a pretty bad one. too." He did not think it was contagious mammitis a« there was no objectionable smell.
