CHESS TOURNAMENT.
PLAY IN T FFiTH ROUND. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) j CHRISTCHIRCH, Friday. The chess tournament was continued to-day, when the fifth round was played. 5 Results: — 8 Kelling v. Miller. —'Miller adopted the 9 French defence, but finally thought the - game not worth further play and resigned. Buchan v. Pihl.—Buchan played the ■ Ruj* Lopez opening, which developed almost as a Queen's Gambit declined. Pihl gained an advantage, and although Buchan played determinedly to the end he had to resign when Pihl threatened to queen a pawn. , McCrea v. Anderson.—McOrea opened ■with the Queen's Gambit, which Anderson declined. The attack passed to Anderson, who eventually forced his 1 opponent to resign. 9 Gyles v. Severne.—After an interest- — ing contest, characterised by careful play, Severne had to resign. Coombs v. Stevens.—Coombs at--1 tacked, and although he could make little impression on Stevens at first he '" eventually compelled him to resign. Roberts v. Hicks.—This was a Queen's Gambit frame. In the end. ae neither player could break through without I sacrifice, a draw was agreed upon.
