ARSENIC IN COCOA.
, MICROSCOPICAL AMOUNT. I.OXDOX, December 19. Owing to the discovery of one-fortieth, of a grain of arsenic per lb in cocoa, a retail firm was fired 40/, and the Rowntree Company, of York, the manufacturers iof the cocoa, £20 for selling an adulterated article. The evidence showed that carbonate ot |K)ta<h. used to make the cocoa more digestive, contained a trace of arsenic. The Rowntreo Company was thunderstruck at the diee.overy. and immediately sacrificed 350 tons of cocoa, valued at between £100 and £250 a ton. aim endeavoured to collect supplies distributed in the period of two months niicn the tiiinted carbonate was used. A Home Office expert stated that this was i!ip first time in his experience that arsenic had tjot into food through carhvnalp of potash.—(A. and X.Z. (able.)
