TRANSPORT ABLAZE.
FIVE HUNDRED RESCUED.
FOURTEEN PEOPLE MISSING.' SIX BURNED TO DEATH. (By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright.) CONSTANTINOPLE, December 18 A French transport, bringing army supplies was destroyed by fire yesterday. • Fourteen people are missing, including three women and three children, who were burned to death. The American destroyer Bainbridge rescued 500 people from the burning ship, doing splendid work. There were many French officers with their wives and a number of troops aboard the transport. When the Bainbridge responded to the S.O.S. the after part of the vessel was a mass of flames, and the passengers were huddled on the fore•part. While the rescue work was proceeding the transport's after magazine exploded, and eighty affrighted passengers jumped into the sea, most of them being rescued.—(A. and N.Z. Cable.)
