■ THE NEW REGISTRAR. MR. MARTIN' RUL'KE O'SHEA. The Council of the Auckland University College yesterday appointed to the position of Kcgi.-trar Mr. Martin Rocke O'Shea. of Dunedin. There were no less than 02 applicants for the position. These, by gradual process of elimination, were reduced to six. and of this number the two who appeared most suitable according to their applications and testimonials were invited to come to Auckland and appear before the Council. They did so and were examined yesterday afternoon, with the result as stated." It may be mentioned that the Hnal decision was arrived at bv ballot and that the decision in favour of Mr. O'Shea was unanimous. The new registrar is only 28 years of age, but he had a brilliant scholastic career, fought in the army'abroad and has had a thorough business training. He was Dux of the Otago Boy's High School in mil. gained a senior board scholarship in 1910 and won two University entranre scholarships in 1010 and 1011. In 1013 he qualified in the accountant professional examination as a registered accountant and for the A.I.A.N'.Z. He served two years with the Xew Zealand Expeditionary Force, and in 1017 he took the degree of Bachelor of Commerce at the Otago University. He is a brother to Mr. John O'Shea, City Solicitor of Wellington, who was also in his day Dux of the Otago Boy's High School.
Since 1012 (exclusive of his service abroad) Mr. O'Whea has Ibeen in the employ of the Rational Mortage and Agency Co. of New Zealand, a firm with a very high reputation for commercial morality and business ability. His promotion was rapid in the arena of business and for some years he has bandied the whole of the land and financial affairs of his firm, and had. control of the whole of its legal work. He transacted all the business of the firm with the Lands and Survey Department and also that of the firm's clients. One recommendation from a high source de-ribes Mr. O'Shea as "popular with all classes and justly esteemed for his high character and principles," whilst .Professor George Reid, Dean of the Faculty of Commerce, at Dunedin University, says of his scholastic achievements that "he was a student of exceptional ability. His class work and performances in the New Zealand University Examinations has seldom 'been equalled."
The new registrar will take up his duties on February 1. Meantime the work of the office will be carried on by the aeting-registrar, who was yesterday accorded a very 'hearty vote of thanks by the Council for his valuable work on behalf of the University.
