For the prisoner Mr. A. H. Johnstone said that ICdwards was a man of good character, although of poor education, who was in a comparatively good financial position in Xapier. where he had £201X1 interest in a vulcanising company. His account only contained a few pounds, and although be could have got money from Napier lie failed t.. do so. Another cheque was also issued in payment for a pair of boots. Both cheques bad since been met. His action we- unaccountable. His Honor: No doubt if be bad had the sense to communicate with tbe Napier people when be wrote these i beques tbe Minus would have been provided. Mr. Meredith: It was a ridiculous and very stupid thing to have done, and particularly to have adopted another name. His Honor said be was satisfied the man b'd blundered into tbe position more by stupidity than anything else, and tluil there was no criminal intent. He would be placed on probation for twelve months.
