COUNCIL BY-ELECTIONS.
a APPOINTMENT BY NOMINATION. Councillor Robertson mowed at last night's meeting of the City Council that the following be forwarded as a remit to the Municipal Conference:—'That the Municipal Corporations Act, 1020, be so amended as to provide for councils to fill all va-cancits occurring on such councils, prodiving that such vacancies do not exceed two in number at any one time." The object of this motion, said Councillor Robertson, was to avoid a repetition of the City Council's experience which occurred during its term of office, viz., three by-elections, costing £1052 18/10. To fill the vacancy caused by the death of Councillor Nerheny cost £341 12/0, and only 2556 ratepayers on the roll of 31,848 voted. Out of 31,774 ratepayers on the roll only 5579 voted to elect members in the places of Councillors Heather and Mackay, the election costing £388 9/4. The election of a successor to Councillor Bagnall cost £327 10/ and on this occasion only 5182 ratepayers voted out of a total of 31.718 on the roll.
