THE KINGSLAND CROSSING.
RAILWAY DEPARTMENT'S OFFER. BOROUGH COUNCIL'S SHARE. £10,000 SUGGESTED. Reference to the Kingsland am Onslow Road crossings was made at the meeting of the Mount Albert, Borough Council last evening, when a letter was received from the Hun. C. .f. Parr, enclosing correspondence received by him from the General Manager of Railways (Mr. R. W. McVilley) on the matter."
Tlie General Manager stated that he had again gone closely into the question, and found that the estimated cost of works to be done was I2:j.O00. In the hope that an early settlement of the question would be arrived at, the Department would meet the Council to the extent of providing the cost on the basis of the Department bearing ;V> per cent, and the Council -J."> per cent. On this 'basis the amount to be found by the Council would be fl(l,:i50. and the Department's share £12, G0t I. To further simplify the matter. Mr. McVilly was prepared to definitely fix the Council's payment at £10,(100. Below this lie was not prepared to go.
Alternative to this proposal, the Department wais prepared (1) to construct a road bridge (56ft wide at the site near the Methodist Church: (J) construct a foot ovcrbridge and Tamp-, at Onslow Road, and a footbridge and ramps at New Edciidnle Road: CM to dedicate for road purposes the land necessary to provide a filift roadway from tlie \*i>w North Road to Clark Street, and a (ilift road from Onslow Road, connecting therewith. The Borough Council would in that easo require to undertake at its own cost llie formation, metalling, etc.. uf the new road between the New N'nrth Rood and Clark Street in line with the proposed bridge, including tlio approaches to the new footbridge.
If the Council decided to adopt this suggestion, it would bo unnecessary to form the now roads to the full width of 00ft, and in that way could reduce the immediate cost of tlvir works ami widen the road tn its full width later as the circumstances necessitated. In either case the Council would, of course, require to undertake to close both Onslow Road nnd New Kdcndale Road at the railway crossing*.
After some discussion on the matter it was decided to defer further consideration until the next meeting of the Council.
