BIRKENHEAD LOAN POLL.
(To the Editor.) Sir, —I agree with the remarks of your correspondent on the subject of Birkenhead affaire. The rates are far too high already in this district, and a loan of £98,500 means a big increase in rates in the future. In the main street there are a number of properties for sale owing to high rates now. and many otters would be glad to get away from Birkenhead if they could do 10. I have no confidence in the present council to administer the affairs of the borough, and my confidence was destroyed by the innouncement in another part of your paper last night stating "that the council had no funds available for making approaches to the wharf at Beach Eoad, Birkdale." As far as I understand, the Wharf there was paid for by the settlers, and they now wish to extend it, and nre prepared to pay £400 more towards such .extension, and vet the inuncil will not make the approaches. Surely the c-uncil could spare n hundred or two for this most necessary work out of the £98,500? It would open up part of this district, and I am confident that when the wharf is extended there would be SO houses erected there within throe or four years. Surely the settlers deserve some assistance? Eut no. the powers that be do not wish to help Birkdale, but prefer expending all the rates on other parts of the borough.—l am, etc., October 13. KAXGATIRA.
