ARCHITECTS AND BUILDERS

(To the Editor.) Sir, — In your issue of the 4th instant there is a reference to the general conditions of contract which are to be attached to all contracts for buildings called lor under the supervision of registered architects on and after the 10th instant. At a meeting of the Auckland Master Builders' Federation it nae stated that the executive of the Master Builders' Federation had endeavoured to induce the Institute of [Architects to agree to a conference for the purpoee oi' revising the old conditions, as the builder* wove de&iroue of Kpciirinjr certain amendments.. The position set out lin your paper, is misleading in that my institute, oil the 22nd of .June last, forwarded to the Builder?* federation x complete copy of the suggested new conditions of v contract as drawn up by this institute, and n*ked that the Builders" Federation consider same, and any sujigpctpH amendment* put forward hy them would receive every consideration from the executive of this institute. In the e\ent of any of the builders' suggestions not meeting with the approval of my executive, we etated that we were prepared to meet a wTnall committee of the Builders" Federation for the purpose of discussing those conditions in dispute. In reply (lie Builders' Federation «v;*- - a joint conference of ten representatives from each liody. with a chairman (o -be decided upon, to diseuee the old conditions of contract, and refused to negotiate with my institute concerning (lie draft new conditions ot i-.intract which mere then in the possession of tlic federation. This was not considered satisfactory, and nfter fiirllier correspondence l>_v the institute, and ajjain asking for the federation* criticism of the draft new conditions of contract, the New Zealand Institute i>f J Architects felt that they hail no other [course than to adapt the new general conditions of contract, which have been drawn up with the desire to b?.fair to the builders, whilst at the same time iDearin" in mind the supreme interests jof the public—l am, etc.. i T>. n. .IOH'NWOX. Secretary.
