KEMAL SUPPORTS PROPOSALS
SEARCH FOR A FORMULA,
ALLIED NOTE TO TURKEY. RETURN TO MARITZA LINE. There is no great change to record in the position in the Near East. It is reported that the Kemalists have concentrated 100,000 men in the vicinity of Ismid. and that in the event of an advance Constantinople and not the Straits would be their first objective. The French admiral, de Mesnil, interviewed Kemah whom he found in a conciliatory mood, and not inclined to be insolent as the result of his successes. Kemal expressed his concurrence with the policy of the freedom of the Straits, but said that so far he had found no satisfactory formula for putting the theory into practice. An Allied Note to Turkey declares in favour of Turkey's recovery of East Thrace as far as the Maritza River, and Adrianople, so long as the Straits are neutralised, and free passage secured. The Allies are also willing to support Turkey's entrance into the League of Nations, and re-affirm that the troops will be withdrawn from Constantinople as soon as the peace treaty is enforced.
