W. H. Johnston (America) beat G. L. Patterson (Australia), 6—2, 6—2, 6—l. W. T. Tilden (America) beat J. O. Anderson (Australia), 6—4, 5—7, 3 —6, 6—i, 6—2. In the first set Johnston, serving, won the first game to 15 on Patterson's errors. Patterson won the second game to 30 on Johnston's nets. Johnston won the third to 30 on placements, and the fourth on Patterson's services, which were erratic. Johnston won the fifth to love, and Patterson the sixth after deuce. Johnston won the seventh to 30 on Patterson's errors, and the eighth at the same score, taking the set at 6 —2. In the second set Johnston won the first game to 15 and Patterson the second after deuce five times. Johnston won the third to 15, playing to Patterson's backhand and keeping him on the defensive. In the second match Anderson served to Tilden, who won the first two games to love on Anderson's outs. Anderson won the third to love on four service aces, and Tilden won the fourth to 30. Anderson persisted in driving out of the court,! and l'ilden won the fifth to 30. Anderson ' won the sixth to 15, and the seventh after deuce. Tilden won the eighth to J5, and Anderson the ninth game to 30 on Tilden's nets. For the fourth set both men returned from tlieir rest much refreshed. Anderson played to perfection in the second and third sets, performing with the skill with which he defeated Tilden last year.
