Sullivan appeared, was charged with having stolen a box containing r>oo cigarettes, the property of the New Zealand Shipping Company. The Chief Detective applied for a remand until the 24th inst. Mr. Sullivan: 1 want bail for my client. The Chief Detective: This is a case of cargo broaching:. There has been quite a lot of it going on about our wharves lately. Inquiries are being made, and 1 ask that bail be not fixed until Monday so that we can complete inquiries. It might seriously interfere with the course of justice if this man is released in the meantime. Mr. Sullivan: I must insist upon bail. He is entitled to it as a right. It is true my client is a waterside worker, but it is also true that any other class of thief—and he is not yet proved a thief—can obtain bail. I want bail for this man as a right in law. The Chief Detective: Well, defer the matter until noon. Mr. Sullivan: No. The Magistrate: I cannot fix a time for bail. Bail was granted in one surety of £100. BREACH OF PROHIBITION.
