THE RAILWAY ACCIDENT.

Sir.—ln your issue of Saturday, giving an account of the railway emush at Drury. you mention that since the fatal disaster at Taihape. when two mail iisentd were killed, another van has been interposed between the sorting van and the enprine. This is incorrect, for despite the protest 3of the Postal Ottieials, the Railway Department flatly refused to consider placing even a van in front of the mail van. On the occasion in question, the extra van containing i'-n<r-lisli and foreign mails for the South, «v fortunately there: :hut this is only an 1 infrequent occurrence. A stroll alonp to | the outgoinf,' or incoming express trains ' any day of the week will prove the j truth of mv statement. It would seem j that the Railway Department would 1 sooner jeopardise the lives of three mail j agents than place a Ullage van in front of the mail car. —I am. etc.. KKTIRED POSTAL OFFICELI.
