FEYNN BEATS CANN. ON POINTS IN FIFTEEN ROUNDS. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) DARGAVILLE. tills day. A fifteen round bout between Mike Flynn lof Auoknnd nnd Charlie Cann of Wanganui : for a purse of £100 wan (he chief attraction >t the Northern Walroa tournament on SarI urday. Tbe large audience was delighted I with the performance of both lads, who l fought the whole way. giving the best osbii bit lon ever seen in Dargaville. Cann bud ! much the best of the first live loiinds. after which Flynn got in some heavy body blows which made, bis opponent more careful. Flynn continued aggressive tactics from the ~ixth rouud up till the twelfth, and piled up la number of points. The lust two rounds I were fairly even, and the verdict for Flynn I in-.f. with a very mixed reception. The i referee, Gnat Williams, was undoubtedly correct, as the Aucklander. after the first ! few rounds, had much the best of it. espeoijally in the close fighting. The fight was not ! fought In the best of spirit. Flynn evidently .being annoyed at the referee cautioning him j Severn] times during the contest. I The best amateur bout was Ihe go between I Troworn (Whanagurei) anil McCarthy ; (Auckland I. six rounds. The bis: •mentioned was much heavier and older than his opponent, and was giveu the verdict after a not I altogether brilliant display. Troworn in particular fighting much below form. WHITTAKER BEATS POOEEY. POINTS IN FIFTEEN ROUNDS. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.! NEW PLYMOUTH, this day. | In a fifteen-round tight on Saturday night :C. Whitaker. the Wellington heavyweight, beat Albert Pooley. of Auckland, on points. i Tbe tight attracted ' a record bouse. ' Whitaker stripped 12.2. Pooley 12.1. and they were perfectly matched as regards height. Whitaker was the more scientific, nnd won on points after an interesting fifteen rounds. Nine rounds were in Whitaker's favour. He used his left to great advantage. Pooley gave a splendid exhibition, but was not so good in attack or defence as his opponent. Two rounds were in his favour and four even. After the ficht had gone half-way it was apparent that Fooley's only chance was a knock-out Time after time he essayed to land a righr uppercut. but Whitaker always succeeded lin cleverly covering.
