THE HOUSING PROBLEM.

CTo tbe Editor.) I Sir, —As a houseless owner I was much interested in your reporter's article on j the housing scarcity as it affects the ! tenant. But what "about the hardships I suffered by the houseless owner! 1 i sonally am the owner of one house only, I I and such house ia occupied by a German. I have three children whose father <not a conscript) served three years at the front. My total income is only 50/ per I week, and yet I and my three children ' are now occupying one room from a 1 sympathetic -friend who has given us temporary accommodation. And this ia the law. The Returned Soldiers' Association should note what I have said, and how a grateful Empire treat* a soldier's j dependents.—l am, etc., M.J.R. (To the Editor.) Sir,—Such of your readers as travel by rail between Auckland and Waihi should . take notice of several houses of the simple lean-to type to be seen near Huntly, Te Aroha and in Waihi. They afford* one way to solve the house problem. This style of house was largely used by the miners and their families in the early days at Waihi, and with success. They can be made clean, dry, and comfortable and several builder friends of mine assure mc they can be erected for £60 a room. When times become more . normal additions can be added. Bnt in the meantime the simple house will do instead of a man spending nearly all his income in rent or interest. —I am,. S. A. SHAW.
