THE RAILWAY SMASH.

■■■_■■ —I. # ■■ ■ TEMPORARY TRACK FINISHED. NO INTEB-RTJPTION Or SERVICE. ACTION BY DEPARTMENT. The Railway Department, immediately on receipt of" the rews of the mishap, made suitable arrangements for carrying on the service. . A special train was dispatched to Drury from the city, which brought back the passengers this morning from the Wellington-Auckland express, arriving about two hours late at this end of the journey. Shortly before ten o'clock this morning the department completed a track around the derailed train, so there will be no further interruption in the service. The Rotorua express was about half-an-hour late in getting away this morning, but it is believed the lost time will be made up on the journey. The engine on the derailed train was of the powerful AB type, and was one of those that have arrived in the Dominion from England in connection with the large Government order. It is understood by officials connected with the department that the cattle on the line were young stock, not more than eighteen months old. If they had been fully-grown animals the mishap probably would noi have taken place, as they would have been swept out of the way oTthe train Unfortunately, however, one*M the animals was small enough to be pushed underneath the incoming train. This is clearly indicated by its mangled condi tion. The remains of the other two art to be seen along the track. Members of the staff from Aucklanc are now at Drury. It is not believe* that a crane will be necessary to remov< the engine, but that new wheels wil j suffice. Xone of the important portiom iof the engine are damaged, althougl parts of the axles are considerably bent j The other machinery is intact.
