(Before Mr. J. W. Poynton, SJM.) STREET FIGHTING. Charles Brown and Robert Johnston, young men, attracted a large crowd at the corner of Wellesley and Albert Streets shortly after the hotels closed last evening, providing a willing and exciting pugilistic contest for the edification of the onlookers. It was a "ding-dong" set-to whilst it lasted, but the arrival of a constable prevented a decision beingi given, and both men were arrested. Charged at the Police Court this morning with threatening behaviour, both pleaded guilty. Johnston bore severe facial signs of the conflict and had evidently the worst of it, but as he had , been previously convicted of a breach of | the peace, he was fined £2, whilst his opponent escaped with the fine of £1. ASSAULT ON HIGH SEAS. Albert Mark White, a fireman on the I Westmoreland, pleaded guilty to having 1 assaulted Frederick Percy Jones, second i engineer of that vessel, on the high seas. : Mr. Bagnall, for the complainant, stated that the offence was- a serious one, and he asked for the infliction of a penalty. The man had been insubordinate and in- j .suiting, and had to be logged. Jones stated that he refused a request'

for ice-water, and White threatened him' with a shovel. Then he dropped the im- ' piement and struck complainant twice; on the neck with his fists. j Accused declared that the second' engineer had dared him five times to) strike him, and he did so at last under provocation. "It is a serious offence to strike an officer," said the Magistrate. "I cannot overlook it, even supposing there was provocation." White was sentenced to one month's imprisonment. THREATENING BEHAVIO_B. Maria Boric, who was last week remanded for medical observation on a charge of having been guilty of J threatening behaviour, was again before the Court, when it was stated that Dr. 'Murray had supplied a certificate to the effect that there was nothing wron" ■ with defendant medically. " ° I Senior-Sergeant Rawle stated that the (people of Riverhead were afraid of accused, and the members of the school committee were especially concerned as | she had threatened children with death as they passed her house. If she was not mental, she was certainly not normal |at times. When intoxicated she was ; absolutely unable to control herself. There were summons charges to be heard against her on August 4. The Magistrate said he would adjourn the case until that date, when all the charges could .be dealt with together In the meantime, Mrs. Boric," he said : you had better behave yourself. You have been in trouble before over this sort of thing, and if you are wise you will keep quiet until these cases "are heard." ! YOUNG GIRL'S COMPLAINT. Mr. Singer appeared to defend a youth aged 20 charged with an indecent assault on a girl of 11* years of age, at , Gre y Lynn. Accused, who pleaded not guilty, was committed for trial at the 1 Supreme Court.
