ARTERIAL ROADS.
NEW MAINTENANCE SCHEJMOEMODIFICATION OF PROPOSALS. (By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day. A further stage in the task of securing a sound legislative basis for solving the main roads problem will be reached this week, when the Minister of Works will circularise local bodies and other interested organisations giving a draft of proposals for the Main Roads Bill. It is reported that the recent conference has caused the Government to considerably modify their original proposals. The new scheme is likely to be less comprehensive, but will cover the principal arteriai roads. There is also likely to be a change in the basis of finance." Motorists are admittedly in a poor position to stand additional taxation this year, and it win be found that tho Government, while suggesting an annual tax, is cjuite willing tn defer its imposition for one year. This would not prejudice any comprehensive scheme, because the preliminaries will take time, and the tax could be collected when its practical benefits are becoming obvious. Meanwhile the tyre tax is becomine; a good nest-egg, which will enable a start to be made.
