CITIZENS' COMMITTEE IN SUPPORT I The citizens' demrtation, which, had re- . ouestod tha Mayor to- take the steps {that ft-rt. »asulted in the City Council putting before ratepayers a proposal to borrow £10,000 for zoological gardens, met Mr. J. H. Gunson at the Town Hall yesterday, and received from him a report of the steps taken in response to t their revest It was no part of mem- !<•»' of the City Council, he said, to pre-' I Jffdice ratepayers one wav or the other I on a loan proposal, but the very facti that the Council had brought the matter I before the ratepayers was an endorse--1 ment of the deputation's scheme. Prom the point of view that it would provide the city with another 'lung" the scheme had appealed to him personally. The Hon. G. Fowlds and the Rev. Jasper Calder thanked the Mayor for his action in the matter. The" former stated he was ' convinced that with revenue from j charges of admission to the zoo and from extra traffic on the trams to the gardens I the venture would not cost the citizens I I a penny, besides providing a healthful I and attractive open space for rtsidents I and a feature of special interest to visi- j i tors. Mr. Calder, who was elected I chairman of the Zoological Gardens Comjmittee, into which the deputation had rei solved itself, added the thanks of him- : self "and fellow zoologists," and in com- | mending the example set by the two j citizens who had offered to donate ani-| |mals to the zoo remarked that though Ihe could not run to an elephant he was | determined to contribute something, if it was only a canary. His support of the proposal was very largely on behalf of the younc. people to whom a. zoo was a boon, and the committee had determined to work their very hardest *o gee thatj the proposal was carried. In conclusion he mentioned the enthusiastic wo-k done in this matter by Mesdames Hurley Wright and Calcott. y 'i
