It U stated that the SouthJ gates signals were fading ami they -were I iina!ble to read anvthimr further." The approximate distance of the Ruapehu from the SotiUnrate was eight hundred miles." The Southgate -was bound f.>r I'alea- ' huna (ChHe) from Sydney. She was off ' tlio Three on the nijht off the ">rd of July. The Southgate iV a steel screw steamer ! built in 1899 by Messrs. T.
