OBITUARY.

MR. VT. M. CABLE. (By Teleiraph. — Press Asseciatlon.) WELLINGTON, this day. i The death is announced of Mr. W. M. Cable, aged 73, the well-known ironfounder. ' Mr. William Cable was born in Forfarshire, Scotland, and arrived in Xew Zealand by the ship Otago in 1569. For '. several years he worked as a journeyman jat the iron trade in Dunedin, and he was subsequently employed for some years as ■ an engineer in several of the Union Co.'s steamers. In 1878 he became manager of the Lion foundry in Wellington, and subsequently became managing partner in Ihe firm of Mills and Cable. In 1883 Mr. W. Mills retired from the business, which from that time was conducted by the surviving under the style of VV. Cable and Co. The business was greatly extended, and turned out engines, boilers and other machinery for some of the most important Government and company requirements throughout the Dominion. Mr. Cable was one of the Commissioners of the last International Exhibitions held respectively at Wellington and Melbourne. MR. WILLIAM LAKE. (By TelPtrapb. — Press Association.! DUNEDIX, this day. Lieut.-Colonel P. S. Hall, D.5.0., Commandant of the Fiji Defence Forces, died las.t week at Nadi at the residence of his brother-in-law, Mr. Robert Carr. The deceased officer fought through the Great War, winning the D.S.O. and his colonelcy. He was very badly gassed and wcundud twice. He was appointed Commandant here in 1919, and formed a fine system of rifle clube. On Sunday I the Jubilee Church was crowded at a [memorial service conducted by the ! missionary doyen. Rev. A. J. Small. The Governor was represented at the service. They were also I notified of a case of typhoid in the ■ Mount Albert district. This is the first' oa=e reported since July 4. | ' An Auckland firm having rabled to London for an order to ho repeated, owing to the wreck of the Rona, received : a letter by mail this morning stating they had already learned from Lloyd's that the steamer had gone ashore "on ltn e northern Coast of Australia."
