Lane, of Totara North, recently visited the scow Haerc. which is stranded seven miles south of Cape Maria van Diemen, and reports that the crew have the galley and its fittings ashore and a sail lean-to attached where they have their meals. The hatch tarpaulins are fixed up as sleeping quarters so that the crew are ouite comfortable.
'The captain reports,"' says Mr. Lane, "that a heavy Wow from the north carried away his fnresni] and outer jib. and he sheltered off the beach, anchoring in seven fathoms (which is well outh He kept steam on the boiler all niirht. Just after midnight the wind shifted to south-west, so he weighed anchor and got tho double reefed foresail on her, the lower portion having Mown out. He hail to double reef the mainsail, otherwise he could not keep her out of the wind. After a short time it fell calm and meantime the wind and current had carried her close into the land, and the first thing: he realised was that he was in the breakers. He dropped anchor, but only succeeding in tearing out the hawse pipe and part of the 'knight'beds. Tine lower part of the deadwocd has broken away, also the rudder. The sheathing has gone off the bottom and the ship is strained and leakina badly. Tt is quite impossible to float her without repairs, as she would surk to water level in a few minutes. The anchor that was dropped waa visSble at low tide and lies 60 fathoms outside the ship.
