Mr. R. H. Hunt, of Wellington, is at the Grand Hotel. Mr. Geoffrey H. Pownall. of Wanganui, is a visitor to Auckland. Mr. E. C. Cutten, S.M., returned from Wellington yesterday morning. The Hon. Major ' Harris has been granted leave of absence from the Legislative Council on account of illness. Lord Clifford, of Chudleigh, who is to visit New Zealand on a scientific lecturing tour, will arrive at Auckland shortly before Christmas. The death is reported from Palmerston North of Mr. W. .' I'lvlips, a retired farmer, who was ,\vell known in racing and also in Masonic circle?. Mr. and Mrs. E. Anderson, of Rcmuera, arc leaving by the Maunganui.. whicn sails from Wellington ou Tuesday next, on a two months' visit to Tahiti. The Hon. Sir James Carroll, M.L.C., who has been unable to resume his seat in the Legislative Council on account of illness, has been granted a week's leave of absence.
Mr. John Court and the Rev. Mr. Busfield, of the Auckland Sunday School Union, will be present at the Sunday School Convention in Christchurch this week.
Mr. E. H. Blakey, LL.B., has been admitted as a. barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Court by Mr. Justice Stringer, on the motion "of Mr. R E. X. Matthews.
Mr. S. Coldicutt has been elected president of the Auckland Bowling Club for its diamond jubilee year. For many years Mr. Coldicutt has held the position of secretary.
Mr. F. W. Furkert, of the Public Works Department, is reported to be making very satisfactory progress in hospital at Taumarunui as the result of his recent accident.
Mr. Malcolnin Ross has been elected chairman of the Parliamentary Press Gallery, and Mr. A. V. O'Brien vicepresident. Mr. J. R. Smith held the position of chairman last session.
Mr. T. Harle Giles, Conciliation Commissioner, is expected to Teturn to the city from Waihi on Friday. He will preside over four disputes at Waihj in connection with the gold mining industry. The Hon. G. Fowlds, who went "to Wellington to confer degrees obtained by students of Victoria University Co.lege in the absence of the Chancellor of the University of New Zealand, returned to Auckland yesterday.
The retirement of Mr. Arthur H. Vile from the editorship of the "Manawatu Daily Times" is reported by an exchange. Mr. Vile, who has" held the position for the last year, was formerly editor of the "Wairarapa Age."
Mr. G. G. Aitken, Rhodes Scholar, leaves Wellington W the Ruapehu on August 12 to take up his studies at St John's College, Oxford. Mr. Aitken will spend a few days in West-port with his relatives before taking his departure.
Dr. L. A. Bauer, head of the Carnegie Geophysical Institute, arrived in Wellington to-day by the Manuka, ror the purpose of discussing questions connected with the Samoan Observatory. Dr. Bauer will also inspect the Observatory at Christchurch.
Mr. John Rose, of Park Rose East, Farnell, celebrated his 95th birthday yesterday. Mr. Rose, who enjoys very good health, and whose mental and physical activities are remarkable, has been a resident of Auckland for over 79 years, having arrived here in the ship Westminster at the end of March, 1843.
Mr. J. C. Smith, II.Sc, of the Auckland University College, has been av.arded the 1851 Science Research Scholarship for 1922, valued at £15(1 per annum, tenable for two years, with the possibility of an aditional year. Mr. Smith is at present on his way to England to continue his investigations in connection with his chemistry research work of last year.
Mr. .T. W. Dadson, who has been a Member of Auckland. stall of Customs Department for the last 30 year.', has retired on superannuation. On behalf of the staff, Mr. .1. P. Ridings, the Collector, presented Mr. Dadaon with a suit case and a travelling ru-r. and a ca-se of silver spoons for Mrs. Dadson.
