■■ ■ 3 AND CUIJXED THE LAND. ' MAORI GOES TO GAOL. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.! THAMES, this day. Tn the Magistrate's Court, a woman named Peneti Haori was charged with having obstructed the Land Department's men at Kerepeehi, where the department had acquired an area of four acres to build workshops and an accommodation house. It was alleged that the accused threw the tool? down and stopped the work. She still claimed the land. The engineers save evidence to the effect that it wjj impossible to go on until the woman was restrained.
Police evidence was that accused said she would be "as peaceful as possible." ■but would not allow the work to proceed.
The magistrate aaid the work was to benefit hundred?, and must not be interrupted by one person or by the whole tribe. Accused was bound ovor to keep the pence for twelve months in her own recognisance of £100 and One surety of £100, id default twelve months' imprisonment. The Interpreter: She prefers to go to gaol: she won't sign. The women was removed to the cells.
