UNIVERSITY A BEATS SOMERVILLE
The Auckland Hockey Association's I championship matches were continued at Remuera this afternoon under the worst ,of weather conditions. The steady rains ! rendered the playing areas soft and greasy, and not conducive to- a high standard of play. Chief interest was centred in the meeting of University A and Somerville, and once again the students defeated their opponents. Areta and University B also met, and the students gained their first win by 4 goals to nil. The Mt. Eden-St. Luke's match, the other senior draw, was postponed. The ladies and schoolboys' competitions were postponed owing to the weather conditions. ARETA V. tTNIVEBSITY B. Astley won the bully from Nicholson, and Torrens got as far as England, who returned, and the University left wing served up a centre, which crossed the line. A free hit 'brought relief to Areta. but Fanthorpe took to half way. England Intercepted, but the blues' forward line carried ! play hack to Areta twenty-flve, where Torrens shot from an acute angle, and Ellison conceded a corner. From the hit lAstley scored the first goal. Play remained in the Areta territory, and Torrens had another shot, which was stopped, but Fanthorpe was handy, and put -a fast shot into the net. University B 2, Areta 0. Long hitting by the Areta backs .kept University on the defensive. A run by Nicholson was nullified by Johns, and Astley, setting the line in motion, the Areta circle underwent several Invasions. 'Balldon figured prominently in tbe defence, and tbe circle was cleared. With the exception of an assault by Areta. from which Hulston scored, play was of an even nature until half time sounded. University It 2, Areta 1. When the game resumed Areta were reinforced by Tait. The students were first away, and got as far as the blacks' twentv-uve, where they kept the defenders busy "until Baildou hit to midfleld, and England made a good run to the vicinity of the students' goal. Browne returned, and after some close work In the students' territory Tait got away, and his shot struck the post. Combined work by .the University forwards transferred operations to tbe opposite end, where England cleared ana Hulston gaining possession ran through the last iine of the students' defence, but Wylie, travelling fast, bit tne ball before it ' reached the goal-mouth. Areta made strenuous attempts to score. Eventually Johns cleared, and Torrens centering, the Areta goal was in danger. A big hit by Ellison put tbe students on the defensive, and Nicholson ran past the opposition and missed an open goal. A loose rush by the Areta forwards was well stopped by Browne, and from the ensuing play Clarke received the ball in front of the goal and made no mistake. University B 3, Areta 1. For a while University had tbe better of the exchanges, and from a loose rush istlev beat England badly and scored. University 'B 4. Areta ,1. Areta then took a turn in the attack, but Rice intercepted a cross hit and got to tbe Areta twentyfive where a big hit by Balldon checked progress and the whistle sounded. University B 4, Areta 1. Mr. J. B. Steele refereed. ■* SOMERVILLE V. UNIVERSITY A University won the bully and moved close to whites' twenty-five. Here a free bit was awarded and Simpson sent the ball down the left. The sphere returned to the centre and E. Watts dashed through, the ball going over the goal-line. Somerville quickly returned to University's quarter from tbe bully, bnt good defensive work by Speight removed the danger. A brief rally by the bines was quickly checked and Somerville opened an attack through the agency of the Watts brothers. The circle was gained, when E. Watts slipped at the critical moment, and University conceded a penalty corner. "From the resultant play E. Watts sent the ball over the net. A run by University penetrated as far as Somerville's twenty-five, where the ball was cleared to Claudet. The left wing ran into the circle and was checked by Veale. The ball was sent across to Hailwood. who shot and netted. Somerville 1, University 0. Another attack by Somerville was turned aside, and the students' forwards got away. The whites' circle was reached and a corner gained, but Somerrllle intercepted and returned play to midfleld. From the left the students broke away. The ball was passed in to Griee, who ran through and equalised the scores. Somerville 1, University 1. Tbe reverse put Somerville on their mettle, and a good passing' run took play to the blues* circle. Sloman conceded a penalty corner, but Claudet's shot just missed the uprights. Play returned to midfield and a few moments later the students started an attack from the left. Good work by Torrenee and Grlce took play to the white's circle, and the ball came across to Carr, who netted. University 2. Somerville 1. . Gradually the whites worked play to the students' quarters, and a smart attack ended in Claudet bringing the scores level. University 2. Somerville 2. A brief snell in the white's circle ended ln a penalty. Munro stopped a hard shot, and play returned to midfleld. Watts got away, and with a good run beat the University backs. He sent ln a good centre but Torrenee nipped ln and saved a dangerous situation by "hitting across the sideline. Half-time then sounded with tbe scores: Somerville 2, University 2. Upon resnmlng the secondi spell University j were first away. After a bout of uninteresting play about the midfleld, the students' forwards got away. Carr made a fine opening, but Cooper stopped splendidly. Smart circle work followed and Grlce netted. University 3. Somerville 2. The blues continued to attack and Cooper turned a hot shot by Griee aside in good style. Gradually the play returned to the balf-way, and the ball came to E. Watts. The centre forward beat the opposition, and acain broueht the scores level. Then came tbe students' turn. Good work by the vanguard, well supported by the halves and Ballantyne ln particular, ended in Carr nipping in and scoring. University 4. Somerville 3. University were now having the best of matters, and kept the whites busy in their circle. A movement started by Griee saw the ball hit to Torrenee. The left wing bit across the goal mouth, and Burton, taking a shot, found the net. University 5. Somerville 3. A rally ny the whites looked dangerous, but just as quickly the students, headed by Carr were ffoal-huntlng. At this st.ige an accident to K.
