It was easily the greatest and most enthusiastic .crowd ever seen at a Soccer match in Wellington. Generally the Australians' "chance of winning was favoured. The ground was hard and fast. The teams were:—
Australia (light blue and maroon).---Cnrtwrlght, Fisher. I). Cumberford. Doyle, Gibh (captain), Stenton, Rrattcn, Maunder. .1. Cumberford. Brown, Ward.

From a corner Braltltwaile opened the lirst New Zealand rush, Anton, Itrttndcl! and Cook getting well away with pretty combination, hut Fisher cut across and hooted Ihe hall away over the half-way mark. There Is 110 doubt that the blues had It all their own way in the Ilrst ten minutes. Corhett. crashed badly with Australia's Inside left, and had to leave Ihe field for lirst aid. Australia were still willing on the attack. Brallliwalla nils-kicked in a mighty dangerous position, deflecting the bail to the left. Maunder slammed In, and Craxton had to give a corner. Cool; got llrundell tinder way, and the latter tried a long shot on flic run, the ball going somewhere near the goal. Play was not fast, till Cook took an opening, and seizing the chance sent It across with great judgment to Ballard, who tricked Fisher and sent It In past Cartwrlght. who never got near. New Zealand 1. Australia 0. .lones was strong both In defence and attack, and was the keenest tackier, taking 011 his own work and Corbott's till the latter returned to the Held. Australia 1, New Zealand 1.
Maunder struck something In a tussle at a throw-In, and went, off with a ricked knee. Jones, Campbell nnd Ballard did some combined work, but a foul against Ballard pulled them up. Somehow neither side speeded up play, but all tlw ««mn it was pretty slick. Cook nipped away, ana gave to Ballard, hut he overran the ball, and Fisher booted it away. Quick alternate attacks followed. Glbb. a great, spoiler, pushing Ballard away out of play, tipped It. over to Brundcll. who beat everything hut Cartwrlght. There was nothing much doing till half-time, play being largely In the way of Interchanges and long kicking from about, half-way. Brownlee looked like getting away, but Fisher and Maunder came back.
In the second spell there was no advantage gained by either side for a while, but Rratten was just a hit high for a very long shot. A (rood deal of heavy work was put. in, and rather too many players were Injured. Brownlee pave Ballard a rare chance, but was ruled oft-side. Cook a lid Ballard took shots, and were given a corner, but this Rained no advantage. Things started to speed up. Australia's left combined In rattling passing work for the length of the Held. Oraxton saved from Maunder cleverly. The New Zealand rlpht dlvlslou. started by Brownlee, went the length of the flcld In a rush, anil Jones sent In a beauty frnm thirty yards out. Cartwrlght .lumped and lifted it over the bar. The ball went up ami down and across, the pace Increasing all the while. Doyle missed a shot at ono end . and Ballard at the other. The blacks kept, about the blue goal, and got a corner. Cnmherford got himself disliked through a bad foul against Cook. Brownlee hammered in a long one, but, Cartwrlght lifted It over.. A comer to New Zealand kept play down at Australia's end till Ward made a spectacular solo run, but could not pass Bralt.liw.ilto.
